our story

Since 1940, people from all walks of life—doctors, lawyers, business professionals, construction workers, farmers, hardcore bikers, and factory workers—have made the pilgrimage to Sturgis, South Dakota. Drawn by a shared love of motorcycles and a spirit of freedom, they gather for what has become the largest biker rally in the United States—and possibly the world. With a party atmosphere that rivals Mardi Gras, they celebrate late into the night and wake up ready to do it all over again. But in the middle of the engines, crowds, and chaos, the FREE Bike Wash offers something radically different. Many bikers stop by expecting nothing more than a free motorcycle wash—and maybe a chance to donate to a good cause. What they encounter, however, is far more personal and unexpected. We don’t accept donations during the rally because this isn’t about money. It’s about demonstrating God’s love in a simple, tangible way. As their bikes are washed, each biker is offered prayer—right there, in the moment. Some are caught off guard, especially given the setting. But most welcome it, often opening up about loved ones facing illness, broken relationships, or personal struggles carried on the road. While they wait, bikers are invited to relax in the shade, enjoy free food and drinks, and read about the heart behind it all: how Jesus loves the whole world—including them. “But God demonstrated His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” — Romans 5:8 How It All Began It started in 1996 with one man, a motorcycle, a bucket, a hose, and three dollars’ worth of soap. He felt a clear call from God to go to Sturgis and show love to bikers in the most practical way he could. What began as one small act of obedience has, by God’s grace, become a global mission. Since then, bikers from all 50 U.S. states and over 25 countries have experienced the FREE Bike Wash. No donations. No offerings. No strings attached. Just a simple act of kindness, modeled after God’s love—who gave everything for us while we were still far from Him. Inspired by a message on "Servant Evangelism" by Pastor Steve Sjogren (author of A Conspiracy of Kindness), that one man was moved by the Holy Spirit to bring God’s love to the streets of Sturgis. His goal? To wash bikes for free and show bikers a love they would truly understand. “My ways are not your ways,” declares the Lord. — Isaiah 55:8 The Bike Wash Today Today, volunteers from across the country travel to Sturgis each year to take part in this mission—to show God’s love with no expectations, no agenda. Each team member raises money through friends, family, and supporters to join this missionary outreach effort. Here’s what you can expect at the FREE Bike Wash:     1    A warm welcome as you roll into the parking lot—and a free biker Bible, no strings attached.     2    Your bike in the wash line while you enjoy some true biker hospitality.     3    A full range of free amenities, including:     ◦    Pulled pork sandwiches     ◦    Bratwursts     ◦    Ice cream cones or bowls     ◦    Fresh-brewed coffee, lemonade, and ice water     ◦    Leather repair or patch sewing     ◦    Boot polishing     ◦    Hand or neck massages from our team (a welcome relief after a long ride!)     ◦    A shaded area to rest, relax, and eat with fellow riders But most importantly, we offer to pray with you and bless your bike, because we believe you’re worth it—and God sees you. And loves you right where you are at. Christian bikers and ministries from across the country also partner with us, bringing their own gifts and callings to the streets of Sturgis. And many of them find themselves just as blessed as those they came to serve.
